How to Check Yours

Now, if your card is not among our Top 100 most expensive cards but you would still like to know its value, you can follow these steps.

Identify Your Card

The first step in assessing the value of your card is finding out what you really have on your hands.

Start by checking the card number. You can find it in the lower portion (ex., 13/75 and H1/H32). Beside the number is the rarity symbol. If the symbol is a black circle, you have a common card. If it's a black diamond, your card is uncommon. And if it's a black star, it's a rare card.

You also have double rare (double black stars), ultra rare (double white stars), illustration rare (gold star), special illustration rare (double gold stars), and hyper rare (three gold stars).

Aside from the card number and rarity symbol, you should also watch out for promo labels and the 1st Edition stamp. Both can significantly impact the value of your cards.

Another thing worth checking is the surface of your cards. If it gives off a shiny, reflective finish outside the artwork box, you have a reverse holo. But if it is within the artwork, you have a holo. Again, these two factors can influence the price.

Check the Condition

The third step is checking the condition of your card. There are five categories:

  • Near-Mint (NM) means that it's almost flawless.
  • Lightly Played (LP) means the card has some noticeable flaws but remains in excellent condition.
  • Moderately Played (MP) means that the flaws are more apparent than LP.
  • Highly Played (HP) means that blemishes and flaws are more visible than LP and MP.
  • Damaged (DMG) means that the creases, stains, cuts, and other flaws are obvious.

Near-mint cards often command a higher value than other conditions. Typically, damaged (DMG) cards are the cheapest — though for a high-chase, genuinely rare card featuring a popular Pokémon, even a damaged copy can still be worth real money.

Use a Pokémon Card Value Checker

The next step is to use our Pokémon Card Value Checker. Upload a photo of your card, wait for a few moments, and you will get the raw price per condition, graded prices, and even population across graders.

Using the information from the previous steps, you can now cross-reference. For instance, if you have a raw Ampharos H1 in LP condition, the current price (as of this writing) is $158.72. If you are going to sell your Ampharos, head to the "Recent sold prices" section to see what people are actually paying — for instance, a recent eBay sale for the Ampharos is $85.

FAQ

What Is the Most Expensive Pokémon Card Ever Sold?

The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is the Pikachu Illustrator. Social media influencer Logan Paul acquired his PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator in a deal valued at $5.275 million — and Guinness World Records listed it as the most expensive Pokémon trading card ever sold. On today's live list, the top spot belongs to Charizard (Skyridge) at $73,777.

Why Are Older Pokémon Cards So Expensive?

Older Pokémon cards are so expensive because of their scarcity and high demand. However, it's important to take into account that not all vintage Pokémon cards are valuable. For instance, mass-produced old common cards have little value compared to rare holo cards.

Why Are Graded Pokémon Cards More Expensive Than Raw?

Graded Pokémon cards are more expensive than raw cards because a third-party grading company like PSA has already verified their authenticity and condition. If you are a buyer, this gives you peace of mind that what you are purchasing is genuine.

Keep in mind that having a card graded, especially if it features an unpopular Pokémon or a common card, doesn't automatically make it more valuable. If you want to find out whether you should have a card graded, use our value checker and scroll to the "Should you grade it?" section.
