What makes a Pokémon card rare
Rarity comes down to how few were made. Secret rares are numbered past the end of a set; gold stars were pulled at ~1 in 72 packs; 1st Edition and shadowless printings came from tiny first runs; and LEGEND, Prime and illustration rares each had low print rates. Fewer copies plus strong demand equals a premium.
The rarest of all
Above everything sit the one-of-a-kind cards — the Pikachu Illustrator and tournament trophy cards, of which only a handful exist. You can't pull those, but the ranking here surfaces the rarest cards that actually trade, led by the highest-value scarce printings.
