What "shadowless" means

The original Base Set had three printings. First came 1st Edition; then a short run with no drop-shadow on the artwork box — the shadowless print; then the standard Unlimited run, which added a grey shadow to the right of the box. Shadowless copies sit between 1st Edition and Unlimited in scarcity and price.

How to spot a shadowless card

Compare the artwork box: a shadowless card's frame is flat — no grey shadow down the right and bottom edges — while an Unlimited card looks slightly 3D thanks to that shadow. Shadowless cards also tend to have a thinner HP font and flatter, less saturated colours. Every 1st Edition card is also shadowless, but not every shadowless card is 1st Edition.

What is a shadowless Pokémon card?

Shadowless cards are from the earliest print run of the original Base Set, before a drop-shadow was added to the right edge of the artwork box. They came right after 1st Edition and before the standard Unlimited print, so they're scarcer than Unlimited and carry a premium.

How do I tell if a card is shadowless?

Look at the right and bottom edge of the artwork box — a shadowless card has a flat frame with no grey drop-shadow, whereas Unlimited cards have a clear shadow giving the box a 3D look. Shadowless cards also have a thinner, greyer HP font and slightly flatter colours.

Are shadowless cards worth more than Unlimited?

Yes. For the same Base Set card, shadowless copies typically sell for a meaningful premium over Unlimited because far fewer were printed. 1st Edition (which is also shadowless, plus the stamp) sits above both.

What is the most valuable shadowless card?
