What makes a card "1st Edition"?
When a Wizards-of-the-Coast-era set launched, the first print run carried a small circular "1st Edition" stamp on the lower-left of the artwork. Once that run sold out, the set was reprinted without the stamp — the Unlimited print. Because the first run was a fraction of total production, 1st Edition copies are scarce, and for chase cards the premium over Unlimited can be several times the price.
How to spot a 1st Edition
Check the left side of the artwork, just below the picture box, for a black circle reading "1" and "EDITION". No stamp means Unlimited. Note that 1st Edition cards are also shadowless (no drop-shadow on the artwork box), so a genuine 1st Edition should show both traits. Counterfeits often add a fake stamp to an Unlimited card — check the grade and centering too.

Are 1st Edition cards worth more than Shadowless or Unlimited?
Yes. For the same card, 1st Edition (which is also shadowless) is worth the most, Shadowless Unlimited sits in the middle, and standard Unlimited is the most affordable. The 1st Edition stamp is the single biggest value multiplier on WOTC-era cards.
