What a Shining card is

Shining Pokémon are alternate-colour "shiny" cards, introduced in the Neo era (2001–2002) with icons like Shining Charizard and Shining Gyarados. They were the first shiny chase treatment, revived by name in the Sun & Moon era's Shining Legends set (2017) and its matching SM Black Star Promos, and reprinted since in anniversary "Classic Collection" sets — Shining Magikarp in Celebrations (2021) and Shining Celebi in the 30th Celebration set (2026). That's why a Promo, Rare Secret or Classic Collection rarity card can legitimately turn up on this page: the filter matches the "Shining" name prefix as well as the original Rare Shining rarity.

Shining vs Gold Star

Both show shiny-coloured Pokémon, but Shining cards (Neo era, name-marked) predate the Gold Star cards (2004–2007, ☆-marked). The vintage Neo Shinings — especially Charizard — are the most valuable, with condition and grading driving the top prices.
