What VMAX means

VMAX cards depict a Pokémon's Dynamax / Gigantamax form, introduced in the Sword & Shield era (2020–2023). They carry very high HP, oversized artwork, and evolve from a matching V card. Most chase VMAXs also appear as rainbow secret rares, and the most sought-after as alternate-art secret rares, broken out below alongside the plainer standard and full-art prints.

How a VMAX works in a game

A VMAX is played like a Stage 1 evolution: it goes on top of the matching Pokémon V, which must already be in play and cannot have been put down that same turn, and no evolution is allowed during a player's first turn. Once evolved, the VMAX keeps any damage and Energy the V had, so the usual play is to attach Energy to the V while it sits on the Bench and evolve once it is ready to attack. The trade-off is printed in the rule box: when a VMAX is Knocked Out, the opponent takes three Prize cards instead of one.

Species with a Gigantamax form (Charizard, Pikachu, Gengar, Lapras) are drawn as that distinct giant form; everything else shows an oversized Dynamax version of its normal look, which is why Rayquaza VMAX and Umbreon VMAX are simply huge.

Reading the three groups above

The ranked list is split by the rarity our catalogue carries. The standard, full-art and promo group holds 126 cards: the regular Rare Holo VMAX pulls of each set, the 15 SWSH Black Star promo VMAXs, and the Shiny Vault and Trainer Gallery prints filed under an ordinary rarity. The rainbow and alternate-art group holds 75 cards, with a caveat: our data source files the Sword & Shield alternate-art VMAXs (Umbreon VMAX 215/203 is the famous one) under the same Rare Rainbow rarity as the pastel rainbow versions, so both of the era's chase treatments live in that group. The other secret rares group is small at 9 cards and is not gold: these are Trainer Gallery and Shiny Vault VMAXs that arrived tagged Rare Secret.

What our prices show

Value is concentrated at the top. The ten most valuable VMAXs account for 42% of the combined value of the 200-card ranked list, and only 14 of the 210 VMAXs we track are worth $100 or more ungraded, while 75 of them trade under $5 raw. The medians tell the same story by group: a standard-rarity VMAX has a median ungraded price of $3.97, against $14.10 for the rainbow and alternate-art group. A popular Pokémon in its scarcest printing is a genuine collectible; the same mechanic on a less-loved Pokémon is bulk.

The list ranks each card by the higher of its ungraded market price and its PSA 10 value, and for VMAX cards the graded figure wins almost every time: every one of the 200 rows above carries a PSA 10 price, marked with a PSA 10 tag next to the value. Across the VMAXs with both prices, the PSA 10 sits at a median 8.4x the raw price; our PSA 10 premium index tracks that gap across the whole catalogue. Grading VMAX cards

The two things that most often stop a VMAX grading gem mint are centring and surface. The full-bleed foil shows print lines and fine scratches under grading lights. Check the borders (our centering calculator works from a photo) and tilt the card under a strong light before paying a grading fee. A PSA 9 VMAX sits at a median 2.6x the raw price against 8.4x for a PSA 10, so a card that misses the 10 gives most of the premium back; the grading ROI calculator shows the numbers per card.

The valuable ones

Value concentrates in the fan-favourites — Charizard, Rayquaza and Umbreon VMAX lead the market, with their alternate-art and rainbow versions commanding the biggest premiums, especially graded gem-mint.
