The grading guide

On the typical card, a PSA 9 is worth 20% of the same card's PSA 10, a PSA 8 8% and a raw copy 5.5%. A CGC 10 trades at 25% of a PSA 10, a BGS 9.5 at 43% and a BGS 10 at 177%. Every figure is the median card with the middle half of cards in brackets, on completed sales for both grades.

The gap between a 9 and a 10 widens with age: a Current-era PSA 9 keeps 29% of its 10, a Vintage one 17%, because a gem on a 1999 card is scarce and a gem on a 2024 card is the expected outcome. Raw as a share of PSA 10 is the inverse of the PSA 10 premium, stated the way a seller thinks about it.

$2,000+7.0% (4–12)2.5% (1–4)1.4% (1–3)1.1% (1–2)

The more a PSA 10 is worth, the smaller a share every other grade keeps: on a $2,000+ ten, a nine fetches 7% and a raw copy 1.1%. That is the grading premium concentrating in the cards where the 10 is hardest to get.

A CGC 10 trades at 25% of a PSA 10 and, on the cards that have both, at 96% of a PSA 9: a CGC 10 is priced like a PSA 9. A CGC 9.5 sits at 58% of a PSA 9. A BGS 9.5 is worth 43% of a PSA 10 and 141% of a PSA 9, so it sits between the two, while a BGS 10 (41 cards, a Pristine or Black Label grade Beckett rarely gives) clears the PSA 10 at 177%. A TAG 10 (250 cards, almost all Current era) trades at 112% of a PSA 10. A blank means fewer than 20 cards had both grades on real sales.

A gem is PSA 10 at PSA; CGC 10, Pristine 10 and Perfect 10 at CGC; BGS 9.5, 10, Pristine and Black Label at Beckett; SGC 10 and Pristine 10 at SGC. The rate is a history of what was submitted, not the odds for a copy: a vintage card reaches a grader after decades of handling, a current one straight from the pack. English cards GemRate has read, as of the latest reading. The PSA population report has the card-by-card counts.

Method: for each English card whose PSA 10 price rests on at least 3 completed sales from a real-sale source and is at least $20, each other grade's price (on the same evidence rule) divided by the PSA 10, and the raw price under the same rule the card page applies to its own multiples. The figure shown is the median card and the 25th–75th percentile; a group with fewer than 20 cards is blank. “Trades like” figures divide one grade by another on the cards that carry both. Gem rates sum each grader's gem count and total over every English card GemRate has read, by the card's set's release year; a CGC, Beckett or SGC reading that two PSA entries share is counted once. Rates and card counts are published, never a card's raw count. Market measures, not investment advice.
