What a Special Illustration Rare is

A Special Illustration Rare (SIR) is a Scarlet & Violet-era card showing a Pokémon-ex or a Trainer in a scarce, story-driven full-art illustration, numbered past the set's printed total. They're the top artistic pull of their sets — a step above the more common Illustration Rare — and debuted with the Scarlet & Violet base set in March 2023, replacing the Sword & Shield-era Alternate Art tier. Our catalogue's 232 SIRs split 167 Pokémon-ex and 65 Trainer cards.

How to identify a Special Illustration Rare

Three things on the card itself settle it. First, the collector number is higher than the set's printed total: Umbreon ex from Prismatic Evolutions, the current #1 above, reads 161/131, and every SIR sits in that above-the-total range. Second, the rarity symbol in the bottom corner is two gold stars — one gold star is an Illustration Rare, three gold stars is a gold Hyper Rare, and two black stars is an ordinary Double Rare ex. Third, the surface is textured: run a fingertip across the artwork and you will feel raised lines following the illustration. Texture rules out most fakes, but an Illustration Rare can be textured too, so it is the symbol and the subject that separate the two.

The subject matter is the final tell. A SIR is always either a Pokémon-ex or a Supporter card, drawn in a scene rather than a portrait: the Pokémon in a landscape, mid-action, or alongside its Trainer. A regular Pokémon with no ex in its name is an Illustration Rare, not a SIR.

SIR vs Illustration Rare vs Hyper Rare

All three are numbered past their set's printed total, but they differ in who's eligible and how often they're pulled (our Pokémon rarity guide covers every tier):

Rarity	Eligible cards	Modelled tier odds per pack
Illustration Rare	Regular (non-ex) Pokémon	~1 in 10
Special Illustration Rare	Pokémon-ex or Trainer only	~1 in 40
Hyper Rare (gold secret rare)	Varies by set	~1 in 40

Odds are CardTrack's own modelled hit-slot weights (see pull rates), not figures published by The Pokémon Company. Each figure is for the whole modelled tier, not the one rarity: Illustration Rares share the "ultra" tier with Ultra Rares, and SIRs share the "secret" tier with Hyper Rares.

Sets and eras our data covers

The 232 SIRs we price span 23 sets, from the Scarlet & Violet base set (March 2023) to 30th Celebration (September 2026), and the treatment carried straight on into the Mega Evolution series that followed Scarlet & Violet. The set with the most is Prismatic Evolutions with 32, then Ascended Heroes with 22; a typical main set carries far fewer.

Why prices vary so much

Every price on this list is either the ungraded market price or the PSA 10 price, whichever is higher — a row is tagged "PSA 10" whenever the graded figure won, including the leading value above. The gap between the two can be large for a chase SIR: how scarce the PSA 10 population is, how in-demand the Pokémon is, and how consistently that print run grades gem-mint all drive it.

The spread across the tier is wide. The median SIR in our catalogue is worth $33.60 ungraded, 66 of the 232 trade under $20 raw, and 39 are worth $100 or more. The ten most valuable SIRs make up 30% of the combined value of the 200-card ranked list. The Pokémon on the card explains most of it: Eeveelutions, Charizard, Pikachu and Mew ex lead, popular Trainers such as Iono, Lillie and N's cards follow, and a SIR of a Pokémon with no fan following can sit near the bottom of the tier however good the art. Trainer SIRs hold their own: 42 of the 200 ranked rows are Supporter cards rather than Pokémon-ex.

Grading Special Illustration Rares

Every row in the ranked list above is priced on its PSA 10 value, so the numbers describe slabs. Across the SIRs with both a raw and a PSA 10 price, the PSA 10 sits at a median 3.5x the ungraded price (our PSA 10 premium index tracks the gap by card) — a smaller multiple than vintage cards carry, because modern print quality means a good share of pack-fresh SIRs grade gem mint and PSA 10 supply keeps growing. A PSA 9 SIR sits at a median 1.1x the raw price against 3.5x for a PSA 10, so the grading fee only pays off on a card that is well centred with clean edges and no surface scratches. Check centring before anything else: the full-bleed border makes an off-centre SIR obvious in the slab. Our grading ROI tool runs the numbers per card.

Buying, pulling and selling

Pulling a specific SIR from packs is a poor way to acquire it: at the modelled secret-tier odds above, a 36-pack booster box averages fewer than one secret-tier hit (about 0.9), and that tier is shared with every other SIR and Hyper Rare in the set. Buying the single is almost always cheaper than opening for it.

When selling, marketplace fees and shipping take a real share of a mid-priced card; our fee calculator shows what you keep on each platform.

Spotting a fake SIR

Fakes of the chase SIRs are common, and our fake card checker walks through the tells. The texture is the fastest check: a fake is usually flat, or has a uniform bumpy pattern instead of texture that follows the artwork. Compare the print against a known-genuine scan for sharpness, colour and the tiny text in the bottom border, and check that the number and set symbol match. For any card worth several hundred dollars, buy it already graded from a seller with a track record.

The market

SIRs are the current collector chase, led in our list by Umbreon ex (Prismatic Evolutions), Mew ex (Paldean Fates) and Pikachu ex (Ascended Heroes), with Charizard ex and the iconic Trainer cards close behind. Condition, grading and the price you pay all shape what one is worth.

Special Illustration Rare Pokémon Cards — FAQ

What is a Special Illustration Rare?

A Special Illustration Rare (SIR) is a Scarlet & Violet-era chase card showing a Pokémon-ex or a Trainer in a full-art, story-driven illustration. SIRs are among the rarest and most collectible pulls of their sets.

What's the difference between Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare?

An Illustration Rare (IR) shows a regular Pokémon in special full-card art; a Special Illustration Rare (SIR) shows an ex Pokémon or Trainer in an even scarcer alternate-art treatment, pulled at a much lower rate and worth considerably more.

Are Special Illustration Rares good investments?

They're the modern chase tier, so the popular ones (Charizard ex, Pikachu, iconic Trainers) hold strong value — but supply keeps changing as each set is opened and graded, so condition and the price you pay matter more than the tier.

How rare is a Special Illustration Rare?

Official pull rates aren't published, but CardTrack's own pack-odds model puts a secret-tier hit — the tier SIRs share with Hyper Rares and other chase-level secrets — at roughly 1 in 40 modern packs. See our pull rates tool for the modelled odds by set.

What is the most expensive SIR?

It changes as prices move, so check the #1 row at the top of this live-ranked list rather than a fixed answer here. Many of the highest figures are PSA 10 prices rather than raw-copy prices — look for the 'PSA 10' tag next to a row to tell which.

Which sets have the most Special Illustration Rares?

In our catalogue Prismatic Evolutions has the most, with 32 SIRs, followed by Ascended Heroes with 22. Most main sets carry somewhere between five and fifteen, split between Pokémon-ex and Supporter cards, and the special expansions built around a theme (the Eeveelutions, for instance) carry the most.

Are Special Illustration Rares textured?

Yes. Every SIR has a raised, textured surface you can feel with a fingertip, following the lines of the artwork. That texture is one of the quickest ways to separate a genuine SIR from a fake (our fake card checker covers the rest). To tell a SIR from an Illustration Rare, go by the rarity symbol (two gold stars rather than one) and the subject: a SIR is always a Pokémon-ex or a Supporter, an Illustration Rare a regular Pokémon.
